Nanaia Mahuta has decided to run for Labour leader, nominated by Louisa Wall and Su’a William Sio. Previously she stood as a candidate for deputy leader when David Cunliffe went against David Shearer in 2011.
Aside from her limitations (that of just having been an MP and minister since 1999) Mahuta does show up what the leadership race is and has been lacking. Women, and non-NZ europeans. What is with Labour’s penchant for white men?
Something Mahuta does do is offset the expected flow of Maori, and Pacifica voters from Cunliffe to Little. If Robertson was to withdraw and put his support behind Parker that would be enough to get the bookish economics firebrand across the line.
Anyway, I am getting rather bored with this whole process, it is starting to feel like Labour is sliding away from being relevant.
